April 2024 Legislature Update

The legislature adjourned Sine Die on Saturday, April 20th at 4:23AM. With the conclusion of the regular session, all the bills passed in the last week of session now have 30 days to be signed by the Governor. She can either sign, veto, or line-item veto legislation. Unless specified in the bill, bills signed by the Governor go into effect on July 1st, 2024.

The remaining bill that ISC was working on the last few weeks of session was the forest reserve/fruit tree legislation. Sen. Mike Klimesh (R – Spillville) had an amendment to make the bill more amenable, but Farm Bureau did not like the amendment and said they would oppose the bill if the amendment was added. The current model of forest reserve lives for another year but this will come back next year as the Senate has had various versions of the bill in the past.

ISC had an exceptional year of killing bad bills and getting a couple good things done.
