Native tallgrass prairie once covered 75–80% of Iowa, but today only remnants remain in small pockets across the state, roughly 0.1%. While the Conservation Reserve Program is a huge benefit to landowners wanting to restore some area to habitat, the programs don’t always fit perfectly with what the highest and best wildlife need is. In 2023-2024, the Iowa Sportsman’s Club helped plant over 100 acres back into grass species native to Iowa, and continues to maintain/improve these projects for years to come.
