Legislative Update Week Fifteen- April 24, 2026

FIFTHEENTH WEEK OF LEGISLATIVE SESSION

The 2026 legislative session has officially moved into overtime. The 100th day was this past Tuesday, marking the point at which lawmakers no longer receive per diem expenses.

Despite the extended timeline, progress is being made. Leaders in both the House and Senate have announced a budget agreement, signaling that a broader compromise is in place. This is a strong indicator that adjournment is near.

One major issue remains unresolved: property taxes. Legislative leaders from both chambers say there is a path forward.

Lawmakers are expected to return next week to wrap up the session by the end of the week.

LEGISLATIVE ISSUES

ISC had a strong week, with several of our remaining priorities advancing in the final days of the session.

Our bill allowing the Natural Resources Commission to determine whether a nonresident must purchase a doe tag when obtaining a buck tag—an effort aimed at helping boost deer populations in low population areas—passed unanimously in the House. The bill now heads to the governor for her consideration.

We’re also urging a final push on our bill to eliminate the “celebrity deer tag,” which is still awaiting a vote in the House Ways & Means Committee. If it passes the House, it will also move to the governor’s desk.

Now is the time to make your voice heard!

MAKE YOUR VOICE HEARD

The 2026 legislative session is winding down and is expected to conclude this coming week. This is our final opportunity to move key ISC priorities across the finish line.

We’re asking supporters to contact members of the House Ways and Means Committee and urge their support for SF 424, our bill to eliminate the “celebrity deer tag.” The bill passed the Iowa Senate unanimously and now must clear the House Ways and Means Committee to be eligible for debate on the House floor. If approved there and passed by the full House, it will head to the governor for her signature.

We saw great success this week with the passage of the nonresident doe tag bill—let’s keep that momentum going. Your advocacy has been critical throughout the session, and this is the final push to help get SF 424 across the finish line.
