Legislative Update – March 7, 2025

EIGHTH WEEK OF THE LEGISLATIVE SESSION

The first legislative funnel has come to an end! This week, lobbyists and legislators were busy moving between subcommittees and full committees, working to get bills passed before the funnel deadline.

ISC had a successful first funnel deadline with many of our priority bills are now funnel proof. Not only did we achieve success in advancing important bills, but we were also successful in stopping several pieces of bad legislation.

The frantic pace of the last few weeks will slow down as both chambers will shift focus to floor debate for the next couple weeks.

LEGISLATIVE ISSUES

The House and Senate Natural Resources Committees passed companion bills to update the landowner/tenant deer tag law. Under the new provisions, landowners with two or more contiguous acres will be able to retain their LOT tags. However, any land sold after the January 2027 antlerless season that is under twenty acres will no longer be eligible for LOT tags.

The Senate Natural Resources Committee also passed a bill to prohibit the DNR from acquiring land at public auctions, though the House Natural Resources Committee did not advance this bill.

For a complete list of bills that passed and those that did not, see below.

MAKE YOUR VOICE HEARD

Thank you so much for your tireless efforts advocating for our shared priorities this session. Your commitment and dedication to protecting our rights and natural resources are truly making a difference. Whether you’ve called, emailed, attended town halls, or spoken with your legislators directly, your voice has been heard. It’s through your advocacy that we are so effective.

As we continue through the legislative session, we need to keep the momentum going. Please stay in touch with your legislators on critical issues like eliminating the celebrity deer tag, maintaining the forest reserve, and protecting our constitutional right to hunt, fish, and trap. Our collective voice is powerful, but only if we remain engaged. Whether through emails, phone calls, or attending town halls, your ongoing efforts are vital. Let’s keep advocating to ensure these important priorities are heard and acted upon. Together, we can make sure our rights and resources are safeguarded for future generations.

Thank you again for all that you do!
