Legislative Update – April 4, 2025

TWELVETH WEEK OF THE LEGISLATIVE SESSION

Less than a month remains until the 2025 legislative session ends. This week marked the second funnel week, during which the legislature focused on subcommittee and committee work to move the last remaining bills past the funnel deadline.

We now have a clear picture of which bills are still in play and which are no longer moving forward. The budgeting process will soon ramp up as the legislature works toward the scheduled final day of session on May 2nd.

Only a few ISC bills remain active, and our goal is to ensure they make it across the finish line….or which ones to stop!

LEGISLATIVE ISSUES

This week was relatively quiet for bills ISC is tracking. The only bills that moved forward dealt with floating turkey tags for landowners and disabled veterans. Legislation also increased the number of special turkey tags given to organizations that take disabled veterans on hunting trips.

With less than a month remaining until the legislature’s scheduled adjournment, the focus shifts to the budget. All policy committees, such as Natural Resources, have finished their work for the year. The only remaining committees to meet are Appropriations and Ways & Means.

The legislature will now begin finalizing the FY26 budget and passing remaining policy bills that are still alive.

MAKE YOUR VOICE HEARD

I want to extend a thank you to every one of you for the incredible advocacy you’ve shown this year. Your dedication and passion for protecting hunting rights and wildlife management have made a tremendous difference. Legislators pay close attention when hunters like you speak up on important issues, and your efforts have had a powerful impact in shaping policy this year. Because of your advocacy, we’ve been able to stop harmful proposals that could have had lasting negative effects on our outdoor heritage such as:

• Prohibition of DNR buying public land purchases
• Extending the January depredation season to the entire month
• Preventing the expansion of ATV access on public lands
• Stopping an open season on all types of geese
• Repeal of IWILL
• Prevented the issuance of 500 nonresident tags to outfitters

We will need your continued advocacy on maintaining the Forest Reserve program, eliminating the celebrity deer tag, and a few other issues as the legislature closes the 2025 legislative session.

These successes are a direct result of your involvement and unwavering commitment. Thank you for your continued efforts and for making a real impact on these important issues. Together, we’ve shown that when we stand united, we can protect what matters most.
